probably about four years ago, we added roadside assistance to our mobile phone plan for my phone. because let's face it, if something happened to my car, it's likely i wouldn't know how to remedy the situation. and chances are, it's likely that my knight in shining honor (in other stories known as my husband) would be with me if and when i needed help with something. today, that $2.50/month charge paid for itself and then some. a morning trip to costco turned into more of a field trip than usual.
C loves costco for the smiley faces they draw on the back of the receipts when you leave and she's also figured out you can get samples as well. with nothing else on the agenda for the day and just a few items on our shopping list, we headed out. we pulled in the parking lot and i snagged a cart nearby to put the girls in. way easier than trying to walk with them to the store. apparently i threw my keys in the passenger seat rather than in my bag as i usually do and when i locked and then shut the last door, i got an eerie feeling of what i had done. yes, my keys were still on the passenger seat.
as we walked to the store, i was formulating my plan of attack. knowing it was likely futile, i dialed andy's cell and he didn't answer. i knew he was likely in surgery, but it was worth a shot. and then i remembered the roadside assistance plan. and i wasn't sure what the exact number was but guessed right on the second try. as i rifled through carter's pajamas for C, the kind girl on the phone let me know that she would indeed be able to help me and even better yet, there wouldn't be any charge. then she asked me for the address of the store and was kind enough to patiently wait as i wheeled our cart back to the front of the store to retrieve that valuable information from the customer service desk. she also asked me what my license plate number was. ha! um yeah, didn'tt know that answer either.
she told me someone would be there in sixty minutes or less and shortly after i hung up the phone, i got a call from AAA letting me know that the towing company would be there by 11:30 which was a short 45 minutes away. i was able to fill my cart and pay and we were waiting outside by 11a. iso many positives in the story. today was a gorgeous day and we had a spot to wait in the shade so we were golden. until about 11:30a when L started getting fussy and tired and C was getting a bit impatient. but as soon as that tow truck arrived, their spirits were lifted.
within five minutes, the kind tow truck driver had us back in the car and was on his way. C spent the rest of the day telling me how the guy in the big truck saved us. and how she was going to tell daddy all about it.
oh the adventures the three of us can get into.

Wonder if someone from the tire center could have helped? Just an aside. Glad it all worked out fine in the end.
Costco is the place to get stranded, for sure!

Glad it all worked out! Oh, I know all too well how you felt. Similar situation with the keys, but slightly different circumstances. I had taken my son with me to the FedEx office which was in a large office building about 1 mile from my home. (I was freelancing at the time.) My son was about 21 months old and in the habit of playing with the clicker of the car as I buckled him in. Beep! Beep, beep! You get the picture. I was exasperated and tossed the keys into the front seat, and shut the door only to realize that the last beep locked the car. Both my son and the keys were in the car. This was in the days before cell phones (hard to imagine) so I had to flag down a security guard who called the police. The police couldn't open the locks which probably meant that a thief couldn't steal my car but it was no help to me in this situation. Finally, one of the officers offered to take my home (I rode in the back!) while the other officer amused my son while playing peek-a-boo through the window! We returned five minutes later to find another squad car and two more officers joining in the game!
