yes. that's what you think it is. a mouse in a coffee can.
for once, allowing my children to go to bed without picking up their toys worked to my advantage. andy and i were on the sofa working and watching the football game when i noticed duke was playing around in the girls' dress up clothes. i'm not sure how, but we soon realized he actually was toying with a mouse IN the dress up clothes. a teeny tiny mouse, but a mouse nonetheless. then the hunt began. or rather, the two of us were dumbstruck on how to catch a mouse.
although i don't drink coffee, i always make and set the coffee maker to come on for andy each morning. and today i had finished off the last of one can and had left it on the counter before taking C to preschool. thus it became our impromptu mouse trap.
it was andy, duke and i against the mouse. sir thomas decided to hang out in the background. note that at tomorrow's vet appointment, it'll be duke who i'll be showing with accolades instead of my older boy. after attempts to catch the mouse in the curtains - three times, in a blanket and in sheets i had set by the basement door to take down to the laundry, we finally became the victor.
wait for it...
we caught the mouse in a tutu. a purple tutu that i have asked C to pick up on multiple occasions over the past three days. the mouse went into the tulle and couldn't get out. andy simply picked it up and shook the mouse into the can. how's that for creative? we were nice and andy took it outside and let it go. quite a distance away from our house.
AND THEN...
while andy was outside, i heard our neighbors walking by on the sidewalk and went to say hello and while telling them what we had just done there was a mouse on the sidewalk! running in a circle at first and then just sitting there a bit before running under the sidewalk itself. fantastic. looks like there is likely a nest there.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
not a half hour later, duke was messing around in the dress up clothes again and lo and behold he had killed another small mouse. and once again, he was showered with love and accolades.
tomorrow i'll be figuring out how to fill the hole under the sidewalk. and hoping i don't have to deal with any mice. i've had enough excitement to last me for quite some time.
did i mention how much i adore my black chunk of a cat? and the dress up clothes and the sheets i mentioned before? currently in the washing maching being de-mouse-ified.

you are brave.
